Faith Kipyegon shatters another World Record, in Women’s 5,000 Meters

PARIS — In a remarkable performance, Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon shattered the world record in the women’s 5,000 meters at the Paris Diamond League. Surprising herself and spectators alike, Kipyegon, known for her dominance in the 1,500 meters, achieved a time of 14 minutes 5.20 seconds, surpassing the previous record set by Letesenbet Gidey of Ethiopia.

During the race, Kipyegon made her move with approximately 700 meters to go, overtaking Gidey and crossing the finish line in disbelief. Collapsing with joy, she received a heartfelt hug from Gidey, the previous record holder.

Reflecting on her unexpected achievement, Kipyegon expressed her astonishment, stating, “I do not know how I made it… I just did the race and wanted to see what happens, when I saw that it was a world record, I was so surprised.”

Prior to the meet, Kipyegon had set her sights on running a “beautiful race,” without even considering breaking the record. Her focus was solely on improving her personal best. Her remarkable performance not only exceeded her expectations but also secured her place as the first Kenyan woman to hold the 5,000-meter record.
